Făgăraș Mountains

Geography and geology

The Făgăraș massif stretches roughly east–west and is composed of crystalline rocks and metamorphic formations sculpted by alpine glaciation. Valleys such as the Argeș and Olt drain the northern and southern slopes respectively. High alpine passes and steep headwalls reveal glacial cirques and moraine-strewn basins that host clear mountain lakes and seasonal snowfields.

• Moldoveanu — c. 2,544 m (highest in Romania)
• Negoiu — c. 2,535 m
• Viştea Mare — c. 2,527 m
• Lespezi — c. 2,522 m
• Vânătoarea lui Buteanu — c. 2,507 m
• Dara — c. 2,501 m (often listed among the highest summits)

Elevations are approximate and several high points lie along a narrow alpine crest popular with experienced mountaineers.

Ecology and protection

Alpine meadows, dwarf alpine shrubs and subalpine forests of spruce and beech create a gradient of habitats that support chamois, brown bear, wolf, and numerous bird species. Parts of the massif are included in protected areas and nature reserves intended to conserve fragile high-mountain ecosystems and traditional pastoral landscapes.

Human use combines centuries-old seasonal shepherding with modern recreation. The Transfăgărășan road, built in the late 20th century across the southern slopes, provides dramatic access to high-altitude sites such as Bâlea Lake and is itself a noted scenic route. Mountain refuges (e.g., Podragu and other chalets) and marked trails serve hikers, while alpine routes demand good navigation and equipment.
