Geography and environment

The county covers a total area of about 2,168 km² (837 mi²), of which roughly 1,621 km² (626 mi²) is land and 547 km² (211 mi²) is water; approximately a quarter of the area is water according to commonly cited area data. Its southern boundary lies along Long Island Sound; to the west it borders New York State. Coastal features, estuaries and developed waterfronts strongly influence land use and local ecology.

History and development

Fairfield County has roots in the colonial era when English settlements were established along the Connecticut shore and inland river valleys.
