Geography and communities

Elkhart County is drained by the Elkhart and St. Joseph rivers and contains several small lakes and watershed features important for recreation and agriculture. Its two best-known cities are the city of Elkhart (the largest city) and Goshen, the county seat. Local government is organized into townships and incorporated towns and cities, and many smaller communities retain rural character.

History and government

The county was settled in the early 19th century and organized as a county in the 1830s.
