Edward Jenner (17 May 1749 – 26 January 1823) was an English physician and scientist best known for developing the procedure that became the modern smallpox vaccine. Working as a rural doctor, Jenner observed that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox seemed immune to the far more dangerous smallpox. He tested and described a method of deliberate exposure to cowpox to prevent smallpox infection.
