Eagle, Alaska: Yukon River Town and Historic Fort Egbert

Location and setting

The community occupies a riverside site surrounded by boreal forest and rolling hills. Its position on the Yukon River has shaped local transportation and commerce: the river is a seasonal corridor in summer and a travel route over ice in winter. The remoteness of Eagle contributes to a quiet, sparsely populated character and wide-open natural scenery.

History

Eagle grew up in the late 19th century as prospectors and traders moved into the area during the gold rush era. A U.S. Army presence was established at Fort Egbert to support law enforcement, communications and public order as the population expanded. Many historic buildings and town features from that period survive and are part of the community’s identity.

Community and economy

The year-round population is small and can vary with seasonal visitors and temporary residents. Local economic activity centers on government services, subsistence harvesting, small-scale tourism and guiding, and businesses that serve residents and travelers. Outdoor recreation—fishing, hunting, hiking and river activities—draws visitors in warmer months.
