DVD-Audio is an optical disc format developed to deliver higher-resolution and multichannel music than the standard compact disc (CD). The standard CD uses 16-bit quantization at 44.1 kHz sampling. For signals that are band-limited below half the sampling rate, the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem explains that they can be precisely reconstructed from discrete samples, which is why many listeners find CD audio satisfactory for common listening. DVD-Audio expanded the available dynamic range and extended the sample-rate ceiling (for example, 24-bit depth and sampling rates such as 96 kHz or 192 kHz for stereo configurations), which can be useful in studio processes, for headroom and for preserving ultrasonic information. DVD-Audio has been used by artists and engineers who wanted to present high-resolution stereo masters or surround mixes with lossless fidelity. Distinctions and legacy
DVD-Audio differs from the Super Audio CD (SACD) approach: SACD used a one-bit delta-sigma format called DSD, while DVD-Audio relied on high-resolution PCM and lossless packing. DVD-Video discs can also carry high-quality audio tracks, but they are optimized for audiovisual presentation rather than the album-focused features of DVD-Audio.
