Geography and setting
The city lies in a high-desert valley framed by the San Juan Mountains, at an elevation of roughly 6,500 feet. This position gives Durango a mix of semi-arid and mountain-influenced weather, with warm summers and snowy winters. The Animas River runs through the town, shaping its downtown and providing a corridor for parks, trails and riverside activities.
History and development
Durango developed in the late 19th century as a supply and transportation hub for mining and ranching in the San Juan region. The town grew around railroad connections and the commerce that followed. Over time its economy diversified toward education, tourism and outdoor recreation while preserving a compact, historic downtown core with many preserved buildings from the railroad era.
Education, economy and culture
Fort Lewis College, a public liberal arts institution located in Durango, plays a major role in local life and the economy. The city draws visitors year-round for cultural events, galleries, and a restaurant scene centered on its Main Avenue.
