Overview
Dommartin was a rural municipality located in the Gros-de-Vaud district within the administrative structures of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Like many small Swiss communes, it combined agricultural land, scattered homes and a modest local infrastructure serving residents of the surrounding countryside.
Characteristics
The former municipality featured the typical elements of a small Vaud village: farmland and pastures, a local road network linking to neighboring villages, and community buildings used for local administration and social life. Its economy was primarily local in scale, with agriculture and small enterprises forming the backbone of day-to-day activity.
Merger and administrative change
As part of a regional consolidation aimed at improving efficiency and public services, Dommartin joined with nearby municipalities on 1 July 2011 to form the new municipality of Montilliez. The union brought together four former communes:
The merger reflected a broader Swiss trend where small municipalities combine resources to sustain schools, planning and public services more effectively.
Importance and legacy
Although Dommartin no longer exists as an independent administrative unit, its local identity, landscape and historical records continue within Montilliez. The change aimed to preserve services and represent residents more robustly at the cantonal level while retaining the cultural character of the constituent villages.
