The town occupies a low-lying shoreline where river and sea meet, producing mudflats and sheltered channels that support fishing, birdlife and small craft. The name, literally "Dives on Sea," reflects this maritime setting. Dives-sur-Mer lies within the historic region of Basse-Normandie and the department of Calvados, in northwestern France.

History and significance

Although the area was occupied long before the modern era, Dives-sur-Mer is best known for its medieval harbour. Local tradition links the estuary with William the Conqueror: in 1066 he is said to have gathered ships on the Dives before crossing to England. Surviving historic buildings and the compact quay area recall the town's role as a regional maritime centre.
