Geography and landscape

The county includes a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline, wooded dunes, and agricultural lowlands. The Kalamazoo River and several smaller streams flow through the county, and an impoundment commonly known as Lake Allegan lies near the city of Allegan. These waterways, together with public forests and preserves, make the county a destination for boating, fishing and hiking.

History and development

Allegan County developed in the 19th century with settlement driven by timber, milling and agriculture. Towns grew where rivers provided power and transport. Over time the local economy diversified, and historic downtowns and waterfronts encouraged tourism and seasonal visitation, especially at lakeside communities and dune beaches.

Economy, recreation and communities

Today's local economy mixes farming, small manufacturing, retail services and tourism. Popular recreational activities include shoreline beachgoing, river boating, hunting and visiting parks such as state and county-managed game areas. Communities range from the administrative center in Allegan to small lakeside towns and inland villages; notable visitors' attractions emphasize arts, galleries and outdoor recreation.

Government and notable facts

The county government manages local courts, public records, roads and parks and works with state agencies on land and water conservation. Allegan County is recognized for its combination of agricultural landscapes, recreational shorelines and preserved natural areas.
