Early life and career

Born in the Ottoman-era Greek world, Vikelas spent much of his adult life abroad as a merchant and a member of the Greek diaspora. He wrote fiction, essays and translations in Greek and worked to promote Hellenic letters. When the idea of reviving the Olympic Games gained traction in the 1890s, Vikelas played a decisive role in persuading the movement to stage the first modern international games in Athens. He was chosen as the IOC's first president in 1894 and led the committee through the planning stages and the successful staging of the 1896 Athens Games. After the Athens event he stepped down from the IOC presidency and was succeeded by Pierre de Coubertin; his leadership during the formative period helped establish the Games' initial credibility and organizational framework.
