Roger "Deke" Leonard (18 December 1944 – 31 January 2017) was a Welsh musician best known as a singer, songwriter and lead guitarist. Born in Llanelli, south Wales, he began his professional career in the 1960s and remained active in music for decades. Leonard became widely recognised for his role in the bands Man and Iceberg, and for his contribution to the British progressive and psychedelic rock movements.
Musical style and role
Leonard's playing combined melodic blues phrasing with the more expansive textures associated with 1960s and 1970s progressive rock. He was primarily a lead guitarist, but also sang, wrote songs and arranged material for his bands. Throughout his career he balanced concise rock songs with longer, improvisational pieces, reflecting the flexible approach that characterised much of the era's UK rock scene.
Career overview
Starting in the 1960s, Leonard performed with a succession of local and touring groups before joining the line-ups that made his name. He founded and led the group Iceberg at various points between his stints with Man, using it as a vehicle for his songs and guitar-led arrangements. He returned to Man several times, contributing to their recordings and live shows. Outside those bands Leonard also recorded and toured under his own name or with small ensembles, maintaining a steady presence on the UK rock circuit.
Writings, broadcasting and other activities
Later in life Leonard shared his experiences beyond performance. He wrote about his years in rock music and recounted touring life, the recording process and the personalities he worked with. He also took part in broadcasting and interviews that documented the history of his bands and the wider scene, helping to preserve the story of regional British rock for new audiences.
Legacy and significance
Deke Leonard is remembered as an influential figure in Welsh and British rock, notable for his melodic guitar work, his songwriting and his willingness to lead projects under his own name. His bands—especially Man—are often cited in discussions of the UK's progressive and psychedelic scenes, and Leonard's career exemplified the mixture of hard touring, collaborative musicianship and occasional reinvention common among musicians of his generation.
