Dante Caputo — Argentine academic, diplomat and politician

Political and diplomatic career

Caputo was appointed Minister of Foreign Relations by President Raúl Alfonsín and held that portfolio through the presidency’s full term, from 1983 to 1989. During those years he led Argentina’s efforts to reestablish democratic norms in foreign policy, rebuild ties with neighbours and reengage with multilateral institutions. United Nations and international work

In 1988 Caputo was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly, serving through 1989. In that role he presided over multilateral debates at a critical moment in the late Cold War era and represented Argentina on the global stage. Contributions and areas of emphasis

Throughout his public life Caputo emphasized the restoration of democratic governance, respect for human rights and regional cooperation in Latin America. After leaving ministerial office he continued to engage in teaching, writing and advising on foreign policy and international affairs.

Death and legacy
