Scope and characteristics

Articles range across conventional encyclopedia subjects: biographies, history, geography, science, culture and current topics, with particular depth in subjects of Czech interest. Content must meet verifiability and neutral point of view standards, and the site supports Czech orthography, diacritics and language-specific templates. Media and formatting use the MediaWiki software, and pages are created, edited and curated by a mix of volunteer editors and automated tools (bots).

History and development

The Czech edition began in late 2002 and grew steadily as contributors added articles and improved coverage. At one point it was listed among the larger Wikipedia language editions and, as of August 2014, contained over 302,000 articles. Growth has continued through ongoing community activity, organized editathons and collaborative projects to expand coverage of local topics and reference works.

Community, governance and tools

The project is governed informally by active contributors who develop local policies, maintain quality-control mechanisms such as peer review and watchlists, and resolve disputes through discussion. Editors make use of templates, categories and bots to manage repetitive maintenance tasks. The community also produces help pages and guidelines in Czech to onboard new contributors.
