Coulvain (former commune in Calvados, Normandy)

Geography and character

Set within the rolling countryside typical of Normandy, Coulvain has traditionally been a rural settlement characterized by farmland, hedgerows and stone or timber buildings. Like many small Norman villages, it combines agricultural land use with a compact village core. The landscape and building styles reflect the region's temperate climate and long agricultural history.

History and administration

Communes are the smallest administrative units in France, and many date back centuries as parish or village communities. Coulvain's precise origins are local and modest in scale: it developed as a rural parish and agricultural village. The 2015–2016 territorial reforms encouraged voluntary mergers of small communes to pool resources and simplify governance; as a result Coulvain became part of Seulline on 1 January 2016.

Local life and significance

Although small, places like Coulvain contribute to the cultural identity of Normandy through regional customs, farming practices and local festivals. Villages of this size often host communal events, preserve local architecture and serve as bases for rural tourism such as walking, cycling and heritage visits.
