Design and symbolism

The primary element is the double-headed eagle, a heraldic bird that historically conveyed sovereignty, vigilance and continuity. The red field evokes bravery and the historical use of red in Albanian banners. Above the shield sits Skanderbeg’s helmet, often shown with distinctive goat-horn decorations: this helmet is taken from Skanderbeg’s personal seal and has become a potent symbol of resistance and unity.

Variations exist for coats used by institutions, but the core elements—the black eagle on red and Skanderbeg’s helmet—remain consistent as an emblem of the state and of Albanian cultural heritage.
