Life and career

King's early adult years were shaped by service in the Second World War; he served in the British Army. After the war he joined the British Council, working in editorial and cultural roles and spending time in overseas posts. He later turned to full-time writing while continuing to contribute to children's publishing and education.

Published in 1963, Stig of the Dump tells the story of a boy who discovers a caveman living in a chalk pit and the friendship that develops between them.
