Clarendon County is a largely rural county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Its administrative center and county seat is the town of Manning. At the 2010 United States census the county recorded 34,971 residents. The county combines small towns, farmland and forested areas and sits inland from the Atlantic coast.

Geography and environment

The county's landscape is typical of South Carolina's inland plain: a mix of agricultural fields, timber tracts, wetlands and small lakes and rivers. These natural features support farming, hunting and outdoor recreation and influence local land use and development patterns. Its location places it within reach of larger regional centers while retaining a distinctly rural character.

History and civil rights significance

Clarendon County has roots in South Carolina's early settlement and county organization. In the twentieth century it gained national attention as the origin of Briggs v. Elliott, one of the cases that was combined into the landmark Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision. That civil rights history remains an important part of the county's identity and is the subject of local commemoration and study.

Population and communities

Small towns and unincorporated communities make up much of the county's population, with Manning serving as the commercial and governmental hub. Other population centers include Summerton and Turbeville, among smaller settlements and rural neighborhoods. For basic demographic and housing data consult the U.S. census resources and local government pages: U.S. Census data and the county information pages at official county site.

Economy and land use

The local economy is anchored by agriculture, forestry and light manufacturing, together with services that support residents and regional visitors. Outdoor recreation tied to waterways and public lands contributes to tourism at a modest scale. Economic development efforts focus on balancing growth with preservation of rural character and natural resources.

Government, services and notable facts

County government provides standard local services including courts, public works and law enforcement, centered in Manning.
