Route and stations

The Loop provides a circuit through or alongside the CBD and interchanges with many suburban lines. The five principal stations associated with the Loop are:

• Flinders Street Station — the historic main terminal on the southern bank of the Yarra River, and a key interchange with Loop services.
• Southern Cross Station — a major regional and suburban hub at the western edge of the CBD, which also connects to the Loop.
• Melbourne Central — an underground station beneath a shopping complex and close to northern CBD destinations.
• Parliament — an underground stop near the eastern side of the government precinct and legal district.
• Flagstaff — an underground station on the western side of the CBD near hospitals and courts.

Three of these stations (Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flagstaff) have extensive underground platforms, while Flinders Street and Southern Cross function as mainline terminals that connect the tunnel circuit with surface rail approaches.

History and purpose

The Loop was planned and built in stages in the late 20th century to relieve congestion at surface terminals and to give suburban services direct access to multiple points within the CBD. It reorganised how lines converged in the city and allowed for improved scheduling, interchange and passenger distribution across several stations rather than concentrating traffic at a single hub.

Today the City Loop remains an essential part of Melbourne's rail network. It smooths commuter flows, offers easier transfers for city-bound travellers, and helps manage peak-period capacity by routing trains through different city platforms. Operational patterns change over time to match demand and maintenance schedules, so services use the Loop in different ways depending on day and direction.
