Geography and environment

The region lies within the Sierra (Andean) zone and includes a mix of deep valleys, steep slopes and high-elevation grasslands known as páramo. Soils and microclimates vary with altitude: lower areas are used for crops, while higher zones sustain wetlands, native grasses and specialized flora and fauna adapted to cold, windy conditions.

Chimborazo and protected areas

Chimborazo, a large volcanic mountain within the province, is Ecuador's tallest peak and an important landmark for climbers and scientists. Its summit is situated near the equator and, because of the Earth's equatorial bulge, is commonly cited as the point on the Earth's surface farthest from the planet's center.
