Cheick Ismaël Tioté (21 June 1986 – 5 June 2017) was an Ivorian professional footballer best known for his role as a defensive midfielder. He combined physical presence, tenacity and an ability to break up opposition play, becoming a recognizable figure at club and international level. Club career
Tioté began his European career in the Netherlands and later moved to England, spending the most prominent part of his professional life with Dutch side FC Twente and then English Premier League club Newcastle United. At Newcastle he earned a reputation for durable defensive work, aggressive tackling and occasional spectacular goals, the best remembered being a long-range volley that secured a notable victory. Near the end of his career he signed for Chinese side Beijing Enterprises, where he continued to play until his death.
