Geography and environment

Much of Charlton County lies within or adjacent to the Okefenokee Swamp, one of North America’s largest peatland systems and an important habitat for wetland species. History and development

The area that became Charlton County was organized in the 19th century as settlement moved into Georgia’s coastal plain. Its development has been influenced by timber harvesting, rail transport, and the protection of the Okefenokee as a national wildlife refuge and state natural area. Folkston grew as the county’s administrative and commercial center while much of the county remained sparsely populated.
