Geography and climate

Casper occupies a location on the plains where the North Platte River cuts through. The nearby Casper Mountain provides a forested highland used for skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities. The climate is semi-arid with cold winters, relatively low humidity, and warm summers, influenced by elevation and inland location.

History and development

The city grew near a military post and supply point along emigrant and mail routes in the 19th century; the name reflects that heritage. Growth accelerated with arrival of rail lines and later with energy-industry development. Oil and related businesses helped shape Casper into a regional economic center during the 20th century.
