Card game

Games played with a deck or pack of cards, ranging from social and gambling games to solitaire and collectible card games; they balance chance, hidden information, skill, and strategy.

Overview

A card game is any game whose play centers on a set of playing cards. These cards may be part of a standard 52-card deck, include jokers or special cards, or be unique to a particular game as in many modern proprietary or collectible packs. Card games can be single-player (solitaire) or multiplayer, casual or competitive, and they often combine elements of chance (the shuffle and draw) with skill (strategy, memory, and probability assessment). Many card games are characterized by imperfect information: each player sees only their own cards, not the opponents' hands.

Essential components and mechanics

Typical components include a deck, hands held by players, a discard pile or tableau, and sometimes a score sheet or board. Common mechanics are:

  • Trick-taking: players contribute cards to a trick and the highest card/appropriate suit takes it (e.g., Bridge).
  • Shedding and matching: players discard cards by matching rank or suit or following other discard rules.
  • Comparing hands: players reveal hands to determine the winner, typical in betting games like Poker and comparing to a target value as in Blackjack.
  • Melding and set collection: players form sets or runs from cards in hand to score points.
  • Solitaire/tableau play: a single-player arrangement where cards are moved according to fixed rules (see Solitaire).

Historical development

Playing cards likely originated in East Asia before spreading westward by trade routes; over centuries they evolved into many regional styles and systems of suits and ranks. By the late medieval period cards were well established in Europe, and the familiar four-suit, 52-card deck gradually became the global standard. New games and families of games developed over time: trick-taking games became a major social pastime, gambling games grew in prominence in casinos, and the 19th–20th centuries saw formalization of rules and the rise of organized tournament play.

Modern variations and collectible games

In the late 20th century new forms appeared that changed how cards are used. Collectible and trading card games (TCGs) let players build custom decks from purchased packs; prominent examples include Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, which combine deck construction with tactical play. Many TCGs borrow themes from role-playing and competitive combat systems (see related genres), while other innovations produced deck-building games and card-driven board games that blend card play with a physical board or tableau.

Contexts and significance

Card games are played for socializing, gambling, pastime, and competition. Casino tables feature card games with financial stakes; clubs and federations organize tournaments in games such as bridge and poker; many people learn numeracy, probability, and social skills through play. The digital era has expanded access, with mobile apps and online platforms offering both traditional games (for example single-player solitaire versions) and large-scale competitive play. Manufactured card quality, protective sleeves, and standardized shuffles all matter in organized play to reduce wear and ensure fairness.

Categories and distinguishing features

  • By number of players: single-player (solitaire), two-player, multiplayer.
  • By information: perfect information (rare for cards) vs. imperfect information (most card games).
  • By objective: trick-taking, point accumulation, shedding, building/melding, bluffing and betting.
  • By format: traditional decks, proprietary decks, collectible/trading packs, and digital-only card systems.

Well-known examples often used to illustrate these categories are poker, bridge, blackjack, solitaire, and simple children’s matching games such as Go Fish. Across cultures and centuries, card games remain a versatile medium for chance, skill, storytelling, and competition.
