Geography and settlements

The former county extended from the shores of the Drammensfjord inland into forested and mountainous terrain. Major urban centres and districts included the port and river city of Drammen, the technology and former mining town of Kongsberg, the Ringerike area around Hønefoss, and mountain communities such as Hemsedal and Hol. History and development

Buskerud's identity grew from medieval and early modern settlement patterns and industrial development. The Kongsberg silver mines and associated industry were important from the early modern period and left a lasting cultural and economic legacy. On 1 January 2020 Buskerud ceased to exist as an independent county when it was merged with Akershus and Østfold to form Viken.
