Overview

Burhan Muhammad (3 August 1957 – 19 May 2015) was an Indonesian career diplomat who served as his country’s Ambassador to Pakistan from 14 November 2012 until his death. Born in Yogyakarta, he represented Indonesia in official, consular and political matters and worked to strengthen bilateral relations between Jakarta and authorities in Pakistan. His professional identity is typically described as that of a diplomat with responsibilities common to senior envoys.

Career highlights

As ambassador he engaged in diplomatic outreach, trade promotion and support for Indonesian citizens abroad. The post of Ambassador to Pakistan involves maintaining government-to-government contacts, reporting on developments, and facilitating cooperation on regional issues. While specific postings earlier in his career are less widely reported, his final assignment placed him at the centre of Indonesia’s relations with South Asia.

Naltar helicopter accident

On 8 May 2015, Muhammad was seriously injured in a helicopter incident near Naltar, in the mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan region. The aircraft involved has been described simply as a helicopter and the event is often referred to as a crash. The accident affected multiple passengers and prompted emergency medical evacuations. Muhammad suffered severe burns and other injuries and was flown for treatment to a specialised medical centre in Singapore.

After several days of intensive care, he died on 19 May 2015 at the hospital in Singapore at the age of 57. His death was reported by Indonesian and international media and led to official condolences from colleagues and government officials.

Significance and aftermath

The incident drew attention to the risks faced by diplomatic delegations travelling in challenging terrain and to the procedures for medical evacuation and coordination among host and home countries. Investigations and reporting after the event focused on safety, the circumstances of the flight, and the impact on bilateral engagements. Muhammad’s passing marked the end of a long diplomatic engagement with issues affecting Indonesians abroad and Indonesia’s relations with South Asian partners.
