History and role in independence

Yogyakarta played an important role during Indonesia's struggle for independence. For a short period in the revolutionary era it served as the country's administrative capital; contemporary accounts note its temporary capital status from 1947 to 1948. The Kraton, the Sultan's palace, remains a living cultural institution and a focal point for ceremonies and public life.

The city is widely regarded as a national cultural capital. Traditional arts such as gamelan music, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) and batik textile crafts are practised and taught here. Notable local sites include the Kraton, the water garden of Taman Sari, and the bustling Malioboro street market. The city also provides access to outdoor excursions toward Mount Merapi and surrounding rural heritage sites.
