Overview
Bülach District is one of twelve administrative districts in the Canton of Zürich in Switzerland. It lies in the northern part of the canton and had roughly 117,000 residents, making it the third-largest district by population in the canton. The district seat and largest town is Bülach. The district's approximate geographic centre is given by the coordinates 47°40′N 8°34′E.
Geography and landscape
Bülach District contains a mix of lowland valleys, river corridors and gently rolling hills. The Glatt valley (Glattal) and sections of the Rhine river close to the German border shape parts of its northern landscape. Land use ranges from built-up suburban areas near Zurich to agricultural fields and forested patches in smaller rural municipalities.
Municipalities and administration
The district is made up of multiple municipalities that vary in size and character: from market towns to commuter suburbs and small villages. Notable municipalities include:
- Bülach — the administrative centre and a regional service town.
- Kloten — home to Zurich Airport and associated commercial activity.
- Eglisau — a historic town on the Rhine with a compact old centre.
- Embrach — a valley community with residential and light-industrial zones.
History and development
Settlements in the area have medieval origins, with many towns developing around market rights, river crossings and local trade. The district’s modern growth accelerated in the 20th century as transport links improved and Zurich’s metropolitan area expanded. The establishment and expansion of Zurich Airport in Kloten was a major catalyst for economic and demographic change.
Economy and transport
Economic activity in the district is diverse: aviation and airport-related services, logistics, light industry, commerce and services, alongside agriculture in less urbanized zones. Transport infrastructure is a defining feature: road and rail connections link the district closely to the city of Zürich and other regions, and the airport provides international connectivity and local employment.
Distinctive features and importance
Bülach District is significant for combining suburban and rural character within easy reach of a major city. Its position near the national border and the presence of Zurich Airport give it strategic importance for cross-border movement and for the economy of the canton. Visitors and residents encounter a mix of historic town centres, river landscapes and modern infrastructure in a compact area.
