Bryan County is a county in the U.S. state of Georgia, located just south of Savannah in the state’s coastal plain. At the 2010 census, it had 30,233 residents, and its county seat is Pembroke. In modern Georgia, the county is often recognized for its mix of rural landscapes, rapidly growing suburban areas, and close ties to the larger Savannah metropolitan region.
Overview
The county includes two main centers of population with different character. Pembroke serves as the historic governmental hub, while Richmond Hill, in the northern part of the county, has grown quickly because of its proximity to Savannah, Interstate 95, and major employers in coastal Georgia. This contrast gives Bryan County a dual identity: one part rooted in traditional small-town and agricultural life, the other shaped by commuting, residential development, and regional commerce.
History
Bryan County was created in the late 18th century and was named for Jonathan Bryan, a prominent Georgia patriot of the Revolutionary era. Like much of coastal Georgia, its early history was connected to plantations, timber, farming, and river transport. Over time, railroads and highways improved access, and in the 20th and 21st centuries the county became more closely integrated with the economic orbit of Savannah and the coast.
Geography and communities
The landscape is typical of Georgia’s lower coastal plain, with pine woods, wetlands, creeks, and river systems that influence settlement and transportation. Parts of the county are separated by large tracts of military and protected land, which has helped shape local development patterns. Communities are spread across a setting that ranges from inland forests to areas influenced by nearby tidal marshes and estuaries.
- Pembroke: historic county seat and center of county administration.
- Richmond Hill: the largest and fastest-growing community, closely linked to the Savannah area.
- Transportation: access to major highways supports commuting, logistics, and business growth.
Economy and significance
Bryan County’s economy reflects both older and newer industries. Agriculture and forestry remain part of the local base, while education, public services, retail trade, construction, and regional logistics have become increasingly important. Its location near the Port of Savannah and major transportation corridors has encouraged residential growth and business investment. The county is also influenced by nearby military activity, especially through the presence of Fort Stewart in the wider area. As a result, Bryan County is often seen as a place where coastal Georgia’s historic rural traditions meet the pressures and opportunities of modern metropolitan expansion.
