Camden County lies in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Georgia. Established on February 5, 1777, it is one of the earliest counties formed in the state. The county seat is Woodbine, while the largest municipality is the city of St. Marys. At the 2010 U.S. Census the population was recorded as 50,513.

Geography and environment

Camden occupies a coastal plain position with a mix of barrier islands, tidal marshes, rivers and estuaries. The St. Marys River forms much of the southern boundary with Florida. Low-lying wetlands and maritime forests characterize much of the landscape, and portions of the Atlantic shoreline and nearby islands are protected for conservation and public recreation.

History and development

The county traces its civil organization to the Revolutionary era. Named for Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, Camden County was among Georgia’s first counties. Its economy and population have evolved from early plantation agriculture and maritime activities to a more diversified base incorporating military, tourism and service industries.

Economy, infrastructure and communities

Modern Camden County's economy includes defense-related employment, services, tourism and natural-resource uses. The presence of a major naval installation has been a significant influence on local growth and employment. Small towns, unincorporated communities and suburban neighborhoods surround the larger cities; Woodbine serves county government functions while St. Marys is a regional center for commerce and tourism.

Attractions and natural areas

Visitors and residents are drawn to outdoor recreation and historic sites. Notable examples include portions of the Cumberland Island seashore and extensive coastal marshes. Boating, birdwatching, hiking and beach access are important local activities. Interpretive sites and historic districts in and around St. Marys highlight the region’s maritime and colonial-era heritage.
