Geography and character

The territory of Brunehaut consists mainly of farmland, hedgerows and small woodlands typical of the Hainaut countryside. Settlement is dispersed among villages and hamlets rather than concentrated in a single urban core, giving the municipality a low-density, agrarian character.

History and name

The toponym Brunehaut recalls the name of the Merovingian queen Brunhilda (Brunehaut in French), a figure frequently linked to place-names and legends in this part of Europe. Like many Belgian communes, Brunehaut's modern administrative boundaries were shaped by the municipal reorganizations of the 1970s.

Administration and population

Brunehaut is governed by a municipal council and mayor under Belgian local government arrangements. In 2007 the municipality had 7,712 inhabitants; the official language is French and local public services reflect the needs of a small, mostly rural population.

Economy, services and visiting

Local economic activity is centered on agriculture, small enterprises and services that support village life. Visitors are attracted to quiet country roads, village churches and walking routes; regional connections make larger towns accessible for commerce and transport. For official information and local notices consult the Brunehaut municipal site.
