Yawovi Madji Agboyibo (31 December 1943 – 30 May 2020) was a prominent Togolese lawyer and politician best known for his role as an opposition leader and for serving as Prime Minister of Togo from September 2006 to December 2007. He led the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR), an important opposition party, for much of the 1990s and 2000s and played a visible part in Togo's political life during a period of contested transitions.
Early life and career
Agboyibo trained in the law and built a reputation as a legal professional and advocate before moving fully into politics. His background in law shaped his public profile: he was respected for legal expertise and for engagement with civil society issues. Over the years he balanced professional legal work with political organizing and public service.
Political leadership
In 1991 Agboyibo became National President of the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR), a party that positioned itself as a reform-minded opposition force. Under his leadership CAR participated in national debates about democratic reform and governance. Agboyibo was regarded as a moderate opposition figure who sought negotiated and institutional routes for political change.
Prime ministership and national role
Appointed Prime Minister in September 2006, Agboyibo led a government whose stated tasks included preparing for legislative elections and managing a period of political tension. His term lasted until December 2007. Observers described his administration as a transitional or consensus-oriented government meant to open space for electoral competition and to ease polarization.
Later life, death and legacy
After stepping down from the CAR leadership in the late 2000s, Agboyibo remained a figure of national significance. He died on 30 May 2020 in Paris after a short illness. His career is remembered for the combination of legal professionalism and long-term opposition politics, and for participation in efforts to guide Togo through contested political moments.
