William Michael “Bill” Daley (born August 9, 1948) is an American attorney and former banker who has held senior roles in both government and the private sector. He served as the White House Chief of Staff from 2011 to 2012, taking the post after Rahm Emanuel left the administration to run for Mayor of Chicago. Earlier in his career he was the United States Secretary of Commerce from 1997 until 2000.
Family and early life
Daley was born on August 9, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of a prominent political family: his father was Richard J. Daley and his brother is Richard M. Daley. For his education he attended Loyola University Chicago and later graduated from John Marshall Law School.
Electoral campaigns
Daley entered the contest for Governor in the 2014 Illinois race but withdrew from the Democratic primary on September 16, 2013, citing personal reasons for leaving the campaign.
Later political activity
When two-term mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would not seek reelection, reports emerged on September 14, 2018, that Daley planned a campaign for Mayor of Chicago. In that election he finished third, behind Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle.
