Overview

Waalre is a municipality in the Netherlands located in the province of North Brabant (North Brabant). It is a relatively small, primarily residential area immediately south of the city of Eindhoven. In 2019 the municipality had a population of about 17,247 people. Waalre combines village life with close links to urban employment, education and services in the nearby Brainport region.

Geography and settlements

The municipality consists mainly of two villages: Waalre (the town centre) and Aalst. The landscape is characterised by wooded parcels, cultivated fields and suburban neighbourhoods. Its location makes it a popular place to live for commuters working in Eindhoven and surrounding towns.

History and development

Historically the area was agricultural, with small farms and village communities. Over the 20th century, growth accelerated as Eindhoven expanded and the local economy shifted toward industry and technology. This brought more housing, improved infrastructure and a shift toward a commuter-oriented population while much of the rural character has been preserved.

Economy, services and governance

Waalre's local economy is primarily service- and residential-based. Many residents work in nearby technology, manufacturing and research sectors. The municipality is governed by a municipal council and mayor and provides local services such as schools, recreational facilities and planning for green spaces.

Culture, recreation and notable facts

Recreational opportunities include cycling and walking routes, local sports clubs and small cultural events centred on village life. Waalre is often noted for its leafy streets, villa-style housing in parts of the municipality and convenient access to Eindhoven Airport and regional transport links. Visitors and residents value the balance between quiet neighbourhoods and access to the economic and cultural offerings of the larger city.
