Volodymyr Mykolayovych Troshkin (Ukrainian: Володимир Миколайович Трошкін; Russian: Владимир Николаевич Трошкин) was a Soviet-era footballer who later worked as a coach. Born on 28 September 1947 in Yenakiieve, then part of the Soviet Union, he became known in the 1970s as one of the most accomplished right backs originating from the Ukrainian SSR. He represented the Soviet national side from 1972 until 1977.

Playing career and role

Troshkin made his reputation as a dependable defensive full back with an ability to contribute to attacking phases when needed. As a right back, his responsibilities combined marking opposing wingers, supporting the central defenders and making overlapping runs to supply crosses. Contemporary observers praised his positional sense and discipline, attributes typical of successful defenders in Soviet football of that era.

International recognition

Between 1972 and 1977 Troshkin earned selection to the Soviet Union national team, appearing in international fixtures and tournaments that brought together many of the strongest players from across the Soviet republics. His inclusion over several years indicates a sustained period of high performance at club level and recognition by national team coaches.

Coaching and later life

After retiring as a player, Troshkin remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor within Ukrainian football circles. Former players from his generation often transitioned into coaching, youth development, or administrative roles, helping to pass on techniques and training methods honed during the Soviet period. Troshkin’s post-playing career continued this pattern of contribution to the game.

Legacy and context

In the wider history of Soviet and Ukrainian football, Troshkin is remembered as part of a cohort of defenders who combined physical resilience with tactical awareness. He was widely regarded within Ukraine as one of the stronger right backs of the 1970s. This reputation reflects both his club performances and a multi-year spell with the national side. His career illustrates the pipeline from regional clubs to the national team that characterized Soviet-era football development.
