Velsen is a coastal municipality in the Netherlands, situated in the province of North Holland. As of 2019 roughly 68,348 people lived in the municipal area. Velsen occupies a strategic position at the mouth of the North Sea Canal and combines industrial zones, working ports and protected natural dunes.
Geography and landscape
The municipality faces the North Sea and includes sections of coastal dune belt characteristic of the Kennemerland region. Low-lying polder land lies inland from the dunes; waterways and shipping channels are prominent features. The entry to the North Sea Canal and the harbour at IJmuiden shape both the local economy and the visual character of the coast.
Population centres
- IJmuiden — the principal port and harbour district

History and development
Human activity in the Velsen area stretches back to antiquity: archaeological finds indicate Roman-era installations near the coast. The modern shape of Velsen was influenced strongly by maritime and engineering projects in the 19th century that created a deepwater route to Amsterdam and allowed development of large port facilities. Industrial growth followed, including major steelworks that have long been important employers.
Economy, transport and land use
Economically Velsen blends heavy industry, port logistics, fishing and tourism. The harbour at IJmuiden handles cargo and maritime services, while nearby industrial plants process raw materials. Road and regional rail links connect Velsen with Amsterdam and other Dutch cities, making it part of the wider metropolitan area despite its coastal setting.
Leisure and notable features
Visitors and residents value the sandy beaches, the dune nature reserves and coastal walking routes. Conservation efforts protect dune ecology and recreational facilities support sailing, angling and beach activities. The combination of industrial heritage, working port and natural coastline makes Velsen distinct within North Holland.
