Overview

Swain County is a county in the western mountain region of North Carolina. It had a population of 13,981 at the 2010 U.S. census and remains one of the state’s less densely populated counties. The county seat and largest town is Bryson City, a service and recreation center for the surrounding public lands.

Geography and protected lands

The county is dominated by high ridges, deep river valleys and reservoirs. Large tracts of Swain County are managed as public lands, including parts of the Great Smoky Mountains and national forest areas, and the scenic Fontana Lake formed by Fontana Dam. These federal holdings reduce the amount of privately owned land and shape local development patterns.

History and communities

Established in the 19th century and named for a former state governor, Swain County developed around small mountain towns and rivers. In addition to Bryson City, the county includes the community of Cherokee and lands associated with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, which preserve cultural traditions and attract visitors.

Economy, recreation and tourism

The local economy depends heavily on tourism, outdoor recreation and public-sector jobs. Popular activities include hiking, fishing, boating on Fontana Lake, scenic rail excursions and wildlife viewing. Small businesses in Bryson City provide lodging, guiding, and services for park visitors.
