  • Bovenkarspel
  • Grootebroek
  • Lutjebroek

Local government is provided by a municipal council and executive board. Services include education, social care, local planning and maintenance of public space; municipal affairs follow the same structure used across Dutch municipalities.

Geography and transport

Stede Broec occupies low-lying polder landscape typical of North Holland: flat farmland, ditches and reclaimed land. It lies within convenient reach of neighbouring towns such as Hoorn and Enkhuizen, and is connected by regional roads and public transport links that serve commuters and local travel. Proximity to the IJsselmeer and inland waterways influences recreation and landscape character.

History and name

The name reflects Dutch toponymy: Stede is an older word for town or settlement and broec (or broek) refers to marshy or reclaimed land. The area developed through the gradual reclamation of peat and marshes and by the growth of small market towns. Over the twentieth century the separate settlements were brought together under a single municipal administration to coordinate services and planning.

Economy, culture and notable facts

The local economy is mixed, with agriculture and horticulture playing a role alongside retail, small industry and service businesses. Residents often commute to larger nearby centres for work. Cultural life reflects West Frisian traditions: local sports clubs, community events and historic churches contribute to civic identity. The municipality also serves as a quiet residential area with regional connections for visitors and residents.
