Geography and climate

The city occupies a narrow strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the coastal mountain range. Its port sits in a natural bay formed by nearby islands and channels. History and development

Santos developed from an early colonial settlement into one of Brazil’s principal export gateways. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the coffee trade drove rapid growth: plantations in the interior shipped through Santos to overseas markets. Wealth from that period shaped much of the historic downtown and public architecture, including buildings later repurposed as cultural institutions and museums.

Santos is connected to the inland plateau and the city of São Paulo by major highways and a cable of tunnels and mountain roads through the Serra do Mar, as well as by regional rail and ferry links to neighboring municipalities. It functions as both a municipal seat and a key node in the state’s economy, balancing heavy commercial activity with tourism and urban life.
