Sabrina the Teenage Witch is an American television sitcom adapted from the Archie comic book series of the same name. The story takes place in Massachusetts and centers on a young woman who must balance everyday life with the discovery and use of her magical powers. The title role was played by Melissa Joan Hart. The program originally aired on ABC for its first four seasons (September 27, 1996 – May 5, 2000) and completed its run on The WB for three additional seasons (September 22, 2000 – April 24, 2003).

Premise

The series follows Sabrina Spellman, a teen witch who learns to control her abilities while navigating school, friendships, romance, and family life. She lives with two magical aunts and a talking cat, and much of the show’s humor and conflict comes from the contrast between ordinary suburban problems and supernatural complications.

Main characters

  • Sabrina Spellman — the central character who discovers her powers and tries to use them responsibly.
  • Her aunts — who provide guidance, rules, and comic relief as experienced witches raising a younger relative.
  • A talking cat — a magical companion that adds a recurring comic element and occasionally offers advice.

Broadcast history

After debuting in 1996, the series stayed on ABC through spring 2000. It then moved to The WB, where it aired from fall 2000 until spring 2003. Across its seven-season run the show blended situational comedy with fantasy elements aimed mainly at teenage and family audiences.

Format and legacy

Each episode typically mixed situational plots about school, family and dating with magical mishaps that required Sabrina to learn lessons about responsibility and growing up. The program became one of the better-known 1990s family sitcoms that incorporated supernatural themes and helped raise the profile of its lead actor, Melissa Joan Hart.
