Geography and landscape

The county occupies a portion of the Appalachian highlands and is characterized by rolling ridges, forested hollows and valleys carved by streams and tributaries. History and development

Established in the mid-19th century, the county was organized before West Virginia became a separate state. It was named for Sir Walter Raleigh and grew rapidly with the arrival of coal mining and rail transportation. Mining shaped the economy, settlement patterns and cultural identity of the area; company towns, labor organizing and immigrant communities were important features of its development.

Coal production dominated Raleigh County's economy for more than a century, and its legacy remains visible in local infrastructure and culture.
