Pavol Biroš (1 April 1953 – 13 August 2020) was a Czechoslovak football player who operated primarily as a defender. Born in Prešov, he spent his professional career in the Czechoslovak league system and is remembered for his steady presence at the back. He represented his country at the senior level and later returned to his hometown region where he remained connected to the local game.

Club career

Biroš played for his hometown club, Tatran Prešov, and for Slavia Prague, one of the traditional Prague clubs. Across his time in the top division he accumulated 212 appearances and scored one goal in the Czechoslovak First League. Those figures reflect a long-term role as a defensive specialist rather than a frequent contributor to attacking statistics. His movement between a regional side and a capital club was typical of accomplished players from smaller Czechoslovak cities.

International career and statistics

At international level Biroš earned nine caps for the Czechoslovakia national team. While he was not among the most capped internationals of his generation, gaining selection for the national side underlines his standing in domestic football during his active years.

  • Top‑flight appearances: 212
  • League goals: 1
  • International caps: 9
  • Position: Defender

As a defender, Biroš’s responsibilities would have centred on marking opponents, intercepting passes, organizing the back line and supporting full‑back or center‑back duties depending on team formation. Players in his role were judged more by consistency and tactical awareness than by scoring records.

Context, legacy and death

Biroš’s career took place within the Czechoslovak First League, the country’s highest level of competition before the peaceful split into separate national leagues. Players like him contributed to the stability and competitiveness of their clubs, and they form part of the sporting memory in cities such as Prešov. He died in Prešov on 13 August 2020 at the age of 67 from heart disease. His passing was noted by former clubs and local supporters, who remember him as a reliable defender and a representative of his region.
