Patric Gösta Hörnqvist (born January 1, 1987) is a Swedish ice hockey player who plays the right winger position. He has spent the bulk of his professional career in the National Hockey League, appearing for the Nashville Predators, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Florida Panthers. Before moving to North America he developed as a junior and senior player in Sweden, including time with Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Elite League.

Playing career

Hörnqvist was selected late in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, taken 230th overall by the Nashville Predators. He established himself with Nashville as a hardworking forward who thrives on rebounds and chaotic plays in front of the net. In 2014 the Predators traded Hörnqvist, along with Nick Spaling, to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for James Neal. During his time in Pittsburgh he was part of strong playoff teams and later moved on to play for the Florida Panthers.

Playing style and role

Hörnqvist is widely recognized for his net-front presence: he screens goaltenders, battles defenders around the crease and redirects shots. Rather than relying on speed or flashy puck-handling, his game emphasizes positioning, physicality and a knack for scoring from close range. Coaches have used him on second- and third-line units, on the power play close to the goal, and as a reliable penalty-kill contributor when needed.

Achievements and milestones

  • Developed from a very late draft pick into a regular NHL scorer and dependable role player.
  • Contributed important playoff goals and was a member of Pittsburgh’s championship-caliber squads.
  • Known for consistent production in front of the net and for converting rebounds and tip-ins into goals.

Notable facts and legacy

Hörnqvist’s career is often cited as an example of late-round draft success: a player chosen near the end of the draft who carved out a long NHL career through determination and a clearly defined role. His style—simple, physical and opportunistic—made him a valuable piece on teams that needed grit and finishing ability around the crease.
