Overview
Otsego County lies in the northern part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The county seat is Gaylord, which serves as the regional commercial and administrative center. According to the 2010 census the county had 24,164 inhabitants; population density is low compared with Michigan's urban areas. The landscape combines mixed hardwood and conifer forests with numerous inland lakes and wetlands, giving the county a character shaped by natural resources and seasonally driven tourism.
Geography and communities
The county occupies predominantly rural terrain shaped by glaciation, with rolling hills, small lakes and forested tracts. Communities include the city of Gaylord and smaller towns and unincorporated settlements such as Johannesburg and Vanderbilt. Transportation is provided by state highways and regional roads that link the county to other parts of Michigan and neighboring counties.
History and population
The area was traditionally inhabited by Anishinaabe peoples before Euro‑American settlement in the 19th century. Economic patterns grew out of logging and agriculture, later broadening to services and tourism as outdoor recreation expanded. Demographic trends show a modest resident population supplemented by seasonal visitors and part‑time residents drawn to lakes and winter recreation.
Economy and recreation
Local economic activity centers on services, small manufacturing, agriculture and recreation. Hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and skiing are important attractions for visitors and support lodging, restaurants and retail businesses. Conservation and private forest stewardship are also notable, as landowners and agencies manage natural resources and habitat.
Government, services and resources
County government is based in Gaylord and administers courts, public records, road maintenance and other local services.
