History and name

Ogemaw County has roots in 19th-century settlement and resource use in Michigan's interior. The county's name derives from an Ojibwe word commonly translated as "chief" or "leader," reflecting Indigenous influence on regional place names. Local communities grew around logging, small-scale agriculture and later transportation routes that linked the area to larger market towns.
