Overview
Molenlanden is a municipality in the western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland and in the country of the Netherlands. It is a largely rural area of polders, canals and small towns. According to official counts the municipality had about 44,000 inhabitants in 2021. The name Molenlanden — literally "lands of mills" — reflects the long association of the region with windmills and water management.
Geography and landscape
Molenlanden occupies most of the Alblasserwaard, a low-lying polder plain shaped by rivers, dikes and drainage channels. The landscape is characterised by flat meadows, networked waterways, rows of poplars and traditional farmsteads. A small portion of the municipality extends into the adjacent Vijfheerenlanden area to the southeast, where land use and settlement patterns are similar. Water control and flood defence remain central to the region’s geography and infrastructure.
History and administration
The municipality of Molenlanden was created on 1 January 2019 by merging the former municipalities of Giessenlanden and Molenwaard. The consolidation was part of a wider programme of municipal reorganisation in the Netherlands intended to streamline local government. Municipal services are organised from town halls and local service points distributed across the constituent towns and villages.
Economy, settlement and society
The local economy is mixed but leans heavily on agriculture, horticulture and other land-based activities. Small-scale industry, construction and local services support the towns, while tourism contributes seasonally. Settlements in Molenlanden range from compact villages to ribbon development along waterways. Community life centres on village halls, primary schools and recreational associations.
Notable sites and recreation
Molenlanden is widely associated with historic windmills and traditional Dutch water-management works; the municipality includes or lies close to several well-known mill sites that attract visitors interested in industrial heritage and landscape conservation. Outdoor recreation focuses on cycling, boating, birdwatching and walking along dikes and towpaths. Typical visitor activities include touring mill complexes, exploring rural villages and enjoying wine or local produce at village markets.
