Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. is the first demo recording by the American metal group Slipknot, issued on October 31, 1996. Released independently in a small run, the tape is an early document of the band's development and features material and personnel that differ from the lineup and style heard on their later, major-label debut. The title is often abbreviated as MFKR.
Background and musical character
The demo captures a band still defining its identity: it blends heavy guitar riffs, sampled textures and rhythmic experimentation with a rawer, more groove-oriented approach than the later, more widely known Slipknot sound. Vocals and arrangements on the recording reflect the influence of alternative and industrial elements alongside nascent extreme-metal touches. Several compositions from this period were reshaped or abandoned as the band evolved.
Lineup and recording
Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. was recorded by Slipknot’s original incarnation and includes musicians who were later replaced or who left before the group reached mainstream success. The release documents early songwriting and the collaborative, multi-percussion style that would become one of the band’s trademarks, though performed here with different textures and production values than on subsequent studio albums.
Release, rarity and collector interest
The demo was self-released in a limited pressing, reported to be around one thousand copies, making original physical copies scarce. Because the band later achieved international fame, the demo has become a collectors’ item and is sought after by fans and vinyl and tape collectors. The recording has not been distributed widely by the band in the same form as the original pressing.
Legacy and significance
While the sonic identity on Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. differs from Slipknot’s later, more polished albums, it is an important snapshot of the group’s formative phase. The demo shows early experiments with rhythm, sampling and theatrical presentation that would be refined in later releases. For listeners and researchers of modern metal, it remains a notable example of how a prominent band developed its sound and lineup.
