Overview
Martin Hanzal (born February 20, 1987) is a Czech professional ice hockey centre. He was selected in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and went on to build a lengthy career in North America, primarily with the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes. After more than a decade in the NHL he returned to the Czech Republic and has continued to play at the domestic and regional level, including for HC Samson České Budějovice.
Early career and draft
Hanzal emerged from the Czech junior system and drew attention from NHL clubs with his combination of size, skating and two-way play. Selected in the 2005 draft, he moved to North America to pursue an NHL career and established himself as a dependable centre known for faceoffs, defensive responsibility and occasional scoring.
NHL career
Hanzal spent the majority of his North American career with the Coyotes organisation, where he served in a variety of roles from middle-six offensive minutes to defensive assignments on penalty kill and late-game situations. He later continued his NHL tenure with the Minnesota Wild and the Dallas Stars. Across these teams he was valued for his physical presence, reach and ability to protect the puck in traffic. Like many long-serving professionals, his role evolved with age and team needs, and he provided veteran depth down the middle for each coaching staff he played under.
International play
Throughout his career Hanzal represented the Czech Republic at various international levels. He appeared for his country in IIHF competitions and was selected for national-team rosters at both junior and senior tournaments, contributing his experience and positional play to Czech teams on the world stage.
Playing style and injuries
Hanzal is widely described as a big two-way centre: strong on the puck, willing to play physically around the net and responsible in his own end. He was frequently used on faceoffs and in defensive zone matchups. His career, like many long professional careers, included periods affected by injury which at times limited his availability and influenced his usage by clubs.
Later career and legacy
After his NHL years Hanzal returned to Czech hockey and continued to play domestically, taking part in regional competitions and contributing to the development of the sport at home.
