Overview
Mario Corso (25 August 1941 – 19 June 2020) was an Italian football player and later coach, remembered as one of the most gifted left-footed attackers of his generation. Born in Verona, he spent the prime of his playing career with Inter and made 23 appearances for the Italy national team. Corso died in a hospital in Milan in June 2020 at the age of 78.
Playing style and characteristics
Corso was widely admired for his outstanding left foot: he combined accurate crossing, imaginative passing and an ability to curl shots and dead-ball kicks that unsettled goalkeepers. Technically gifted and quick in tight spaces, he functioned both as a traditional winger and as a creative wide playmaker, delivering assists and creating opportunities through movement and vision rather than pure pace alone.
Club career and achievements
His most notable period came during the 1960s with Inter, where he was a regular contributor to a team that achieved sustained domestic and continental success under a famous coaching regime. Corso’s long tenure at the club, his consistency and his ability to perform in big matches made him a central figure in that era of Italian club football.
International and coaching career
Although highly rated at club level, Corso’s international career was relatively limited: 23 caps reflect both strong competition for places in Italy and tactical choices by successive managers. After retiring as a player he remained in the game, working as a coach and mentor in Italian football, offering his experience to senior teams and youth players.
Legacy and notable facts
Corso is remembered as one of Italy’s finest left-sided attackers of the postwar period. His reputation rests on refined technique, the distinctive curl of his free kicks and crosses, and his role in one of Inter’s most successful eras. Fans and football historians often cite him as an exemplar of artistry on the wing in an age when tactical rigour was increasingly prominent.
