Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster

Family background and early life

Born into the de Roet family, Katherine was the daughter of Paon de Roet, a knight. She came to court service as a member of a noble household and acquired connections that would shape her future. Her sister Philippa de Roet married the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, making Katherine part of a network that linked literary and aristocratic circles of the period.

Relationship with John of Gaunt

Katherine entered John of Gaunt's circle in the 1370s. For many years she was his companion and bore him children while he remained married to others. After the death of Gaunt's previous wives, he and Katherine married in 1396. The relationship attracted attention because it grew from a long-standing liaison into a formal marriage at the highest level of English nobility.

Children and legacy

Their children, surnamed Beaufort, included:

These Beauforts were later legitimized and became influential magnates. Through the Beaufort line Katherine is an ancestress of the Tudor dynasty, which claimed the throne in the late 15th century.
